Probably at this point, you’ve heard about ChatGPT, the general-purpose chatbot prototype that is now the internet’s obsession. It has swiftly taken over as the leading illustration of the impact AI-generated content will have in the future, demonstrating how potent these technologies may be.

There is lot more to know about the ChatGPT. Let’s dig in.

ChatGPT Overview

ChatGPT is developed by OpenAI, a non-profit artificial intelligence research lab consisting of the for-profit corporation OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc.

OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba and John Schulman with the goal of promoting and developing friendly AI in a way that benefits humanity as a whole.

The company has since grown and expanded its research efforts, developing and releasing several advanced AI models including GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) which is the architecture used by ChatGPT. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) has a positive impact on humanity, and the company is focused on developing and promoting AGI technologies in a responsible and safe manner.

ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI, which utilizes the transformer architecture to generate human-like text based on the input it receives.

It was trained on a diverse range of internet text, including websites, books, and social media, to generate text that is coherent and contextually appropriate. ChatGPT is capable of performing a variety of natural language processing tasks, such as text generation, question answering, and conversation modeling. The model has a large number of parameters, over 175 billion, which allows it to generate high-quality text that can be difficult for humans to distinguish from text written by another person. However, due to the nature of its training data, ChatGPT may also generate text that is biased or offensive.

ChatGPT is widely used in various applications, including chatbots, customer support systems, and content creation. Despite its advanced capabilities, it is important to note that ChatGPT is only a machine and its responses should be evaluated and validated before use in critical applications.

ChatGPT Evolution Phases

Do you that there were systems or bots which exists before the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, to simulate human conversations?

ELIZA is an early natural language processing computer program created from 1964 to 1966 at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory by Joseph Weizenbaum.

In 1995, Richard Wallace developed A.L.I.C.E. (Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity), also referred to as Alicebot, or simply Alice, is a natural language processing chatterbot—a program that engages in a conversation with a human by applying some heuristical pattern matching rules to the human’s input

SmarterChild was an intelligent agent or “bot” developed by ActiveBuddy, Inc in 2001. It was widely dispersed over international instant messaging networks. Over the course of its existence, SmarterChild amassed more than 30 million “buddies” on Instant Messenger platforms like AIM (AOL), MSN, and Yahoo Messenger.

Later in 2010, Apple Inc launched SIRI – It uses voice queries, gesture based control, focus-tracking and a natural-language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of Internet services. With prolonged use, it learns the unique language usages, queries, and preferences of users and returns results that are tailored to them.

The evolution of ChatGPT is summarized in the following phases:

  1. GPT-1: The first version of OpenAI’s Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) language model, introduced in 2018.
  2. GPT-2: A larger and more sophisticated version of GPT-1, released in 2019.
  3. GPT-3: The largest and most advanced version of GPT to date, released in 2020.
  4. GPT-3 Fine-Tuning: The ability to fine-tune GPT-3 on specific tasks and domains to improve its performance.
  5. GPT-3 based conversational AI models like ChatGPT.

In summary, ChatGPT is a powerful language model that has the potential to alter the way we interact with machines. By enabling computers to understand and create natural language text, ChatGPT can improve the efficacy and efficiency of a number of tasks. Additionally, it can facilitate and improve human-machine communication.

It’s important to consider how using ChatGPT and other AI in communication could alter morals, though, as with any new technology. Building ethical frameworks and standards for their usage will be required to guarantee that AI systems are used morally and in a way that benefits society. ChatGPT has the potential to fundamentally alter how we interact with machines, thus it will be critical to carefully consider the ethical implications of using this technology in the future.
